  • The United Arab Emirates ranks 7th by GDP (PPP) per capita, ahead of countries like the United States, Canada, Germany,  Netherlands, Hong Kong, Japan etc. (List of countries by GDP (PPP) per capita)
  • Dubai ranks third in cities with highest number of skyscrapers (148 skyscrapers in Dubai), and Abu Dhabi ranks 27th (30 skyscrapers).
  • In 2020 Dubai will host the World Expo, which is held every 5 years in different countries. Here are some facts about the Expo:
    • Dubai’s masterplan proposes a site on 438 hectares of land off Jebel Ali equidistant to the international airports of Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
    • To support its theme of sustainability, the iconic structure that covers much of the site will have photovoltaic fabric that is planned to generate at least 50% of the Expo’s power on site.
    • Dubai Expo 2020 expects to create 277,149 jobs between 2013 and 2021.
    • 40% of the employment opportunities generated would be in the travel and tourism sector.
    • Dubai Expo 2020 expects to attract 25 million unique visitors and up to 33 million visits over the six-month period.

Other interesting facts about this fast developing area are:

    • Masdar City, which is being built near Abu Dhabi, will be the world’s first carbon-free city(no carbon-based fuels). The city will be fully powered by renewable energy and will host the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency.
    • The Dubai police fleet includes Lamborghini’s, Ferrari’s and Bentley’s. This is to allow them to catch speeders who can outrun other cars
    • Sharjah was the first to establish an airport in the Gulf region.
    • We all know that the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa, is in Dubai.  Now an even taller one is under construction!
    • The Palm islands and The World, in Dubai are among the largest man-made islands in the world. These islands added nearly 500 km to Dubai’s coastline.
    • The Capital Gate in Abu Dhabi (the capital city of UAE) is world’s most inclined building and it looks stunning!
    • Abu Dhabi is building two brand new museums: Louvre Abu Dhabi and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi
    • Ferrari World, a Ferrari themed amusement park on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, is the largest indoor amusement park in the world.

The world’s tallest hotel, JW Marriott Marquis, is situated in Dubai. In fact, world’s top 5 tallest hotels are all situated in Dubai, and 7 out of world’s ten tallest hotels are in Dubai.

  • Dubai’s Burj-Al-Arab is one of the most luxurious and most beautiful hotels in the world. It is the third tallest hotel in the world.
  • Dubai’s international airport (DXB) is one of the busiest airports in the world. It is the 7th busiest airport in the world by passenger traffic and the 2nd busiest airport in the world by international passenger traffic. The terminal 3 is the largest airport terminal in the world and ranks 2nd in the list of buildings with the largest amount of floor area.
  • The Dubai Metro is the world’s first driverless metro rail network and has the world’s longest fully automated metro network with a route length of 75 kilometers.
  • The Dubai Mall is the world’s largest mall by total area. It houses the world’s second largest aquarium, world’s largest acrylic panel and world’s largest sweet shop! In 2011 and 2012, Dubai Mall held the title of world’s most-visited shopping and leisure destination.
  • One out of every 4 construction cranes on Earth is located in Dubai.
  • Kuwait has the second-freest economy in the Middle East. It is the fourth-richest country in the world in terms of per capita income.
  • Qatar will host the FIFA World Cup in 2022 for which it will build nine eco-friendly iconic stadiums, some of which will be able to host up to 80,000 people.
